James and Claire Probert Hassett
A Kindness Remembered

Claire Probert ’49 was a young engineering student at Syracuse University when, in 1946, she got the news that her beloved father was seriously ill.

Without enough money to travel to see her father, she faced the difficult decision of having to drop out of school to help with his care. The Reverend Charles Casper Noble, then dean of Hendricks Chapel, heard about her situation and made sure she had the train tickets she needed.

Both Clare and her husband, James R. Hassett, never forgot the kindness and support she found at Hendricks. During his lifetime, James Hassett established a $1 million bequest commitment, honoring his late wife, to support the Hendricks Dean’s Discretionary Fund.

Created to assist with financial emergencies, the Hassett Fund is able to step in when students have exhausted all other avenues of support. The gift was recognized with the naming of the Hassett Dean’s Suite in Hendricks Chapel, and continues to help students in financial need today.
